Authentication Of Aadhaar Number Under The GST Act

On 14th March 2020, the GST (Goods and Services Tax) Council had their 39th meeting approving, Aadhaar authentication for GST registration for new taxpayers from 1st April 2020 onwards. However, the implementation of the same kept getting postponed due to the COVID-19 for which the entire nation was under lockdown.

After long halt, the service was finally rolled out on 21st August 2020 after a notification from the Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs (CBIC).

Under the new mechanism, a person can get approval for his/her business in just 3 working days if he/she opts for GST registration by Aadhaar authentication. If no notice is issued, they would not need to wait for physical verification.

For applicants not opting for Aadhaar authentication for GST registration have to get their place of business and documents verified physically before being approved, which may take up to 21 working days or more if notice is issued. In case of no notice of rejection is issued within the stipulated time frame, the application would be deemed approved.

The new hassle-free GST registration system will facilitate honest taxpayers of the country, keeping fraudulent application out of the GST mechanism at the same time..

The following is a detailed step by step guide on Aadhaar Authentication for GST registration.

  • Log on to the official Goods and Service Tax portal (www.gst.gov.in).
  • On the home page, click on the ‘Services’ tab.
  • Under that click on ‘Registration’ and then ‘New Registration.
  • Opt for Aadhaar authentication.
  • After this, you will receive an authentication link on GST your registered mobile number and E-mail ID.
  • After clicking on the link, you will be forwarded to a page where you have to provide your Aadhaar number. Then click on the validate option.
  • You will receive an OTP which you have to enter in the box and verify.
  • A message of successful e-KYC authentication will appear.
  • Expect approval within 3 working days.

For those opting for physical verification, the GST registration application will be sent to the jurisdictional tax authority which will carry out the necessary documentary and/or physical site verification before approving the registration. If no notice is issued within 21 working days by the Tax Authority, the registration application shall be deemed as approved.
